Collecting Treasures

Sometimes it's just the little things in life that make all the
difference. I have a tiny little obsession that just keeps
growing and growing. Ever since we opened I started
collecting vintage birthday party favors and bakery things.

I love anything that has to do with baking from cakes
to cupcakes, birthday parties and all sorts of fun little
gadgets.

Lets see...I have cookbooks, cake decorating books, kitchen
aprons, cake plates, and various vintage cooking utensils,
to name a few but my favorite thing to look for are vintage
cake toppers.

The little pokes that are so cute that used to go on cupcakes
when I was little.

I have to say that ever since Amy Sedaris was
photographed with her personal collection of cupcake toppers
in Budget Living magazine a few months ago, it seems that
they have gained popularity and have been more difficult
to find.

Believe it or not like most things from Back in the Day,
they just don't make them like this anymore.

They are fascinating to admire and have such adorable details.
Especially some of the really old ones. I covet the ballerinas
most ofall and only part with them occasionally.
I have actually gotten into bidding wars on E-bay to win some
of my favorites in the collection.

I like to pretend that it's Amy Sedaris who wants those
ballerinas just as much as I do. In spite of losing a few
battles, I still have a HUGEcollection.
Griff finally put up a special shelf in the kitchen just for
them.

A friend gave me a great idea to knock out a wall in our
apartment and turn the wall into a HUGE glass shadowbox.
Now that would be a cool room divider (but I don't think
my landlord would be crazy about the idea) I do want to
find a way to enjoy them outside of the box and when I
am at home and not at the bakery.

In the meantime. I have decided to put them on top of
cupcakes to sell at the bakery. I am calling them vintage
cupcakes and they will come with a label (kind of like a
fortune cookie)letting people know they are collecting a
piece of history.

It is going to be so much fun to share them with cupcake
lovers all over Savannah.
