Buttercream & Roses

A Pinch of This, A Dash of That, A Baker Blossoms

I am my Mothers Daughter

I have been so very homesick lately. I am a
native Angelino and I am missing just about
everything about Southern California these days.

Lauren suggested I watch the movie Splanglish
and I loved it! I could watch it over and over
if only for the vintage textiles and scenery of home.

I can remember when I was in college and people
would make fun of me when I said I was from California.
Oh fruits and nuts they used to say & other oddities.
I was even at the hair dresser recently and one of the
stylist was talking about how phony people are from California.
The funny thing is that she knew that I was from California so
I thought I had to set her straight about how most
of the "phony" people probably moved there from
somewhere else.

Don't get me wrong I love Savannah, but I have
just had this Dorothy (The wizard of oz)
thing going on these days. I miss all the
neighborhoods that are each unique in there own way.
The different cultures, accents, museums, flea markets.
The creative shops and restaurants that each have there
own flair.

Everyday someone comes in to the bakery and asks me
"Why did you choose this location?" or "Where are you from?"
As if I am from a foreign land. I honestly don't know
what that has to do with buying cookies and cupcakes from me.

I am proud to be a native of California.
It is such a creative and wonderful place. It is a place that
embraces the neighborhood business and supports it.

So when Griff and I began
planning our summer vaca and I am thinking
that just maybe if I click my heels 3 times I will be
driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu right?

Well not exactly. It looks like just a quick drive
up to Charleston & Atlanta this year and I really am
embracing the idea of checking out some unknown
territory.

I hope that when people visit Savannah
they will also expand their horizons and
enjoy visiting our little neighborhood
bakery.

Thank goodness two of my newest friends from home
strolled in for Lunch at the bakery recently and
of course I was quickly reminded why the beach boys
wrote a song about us. (Smile)

I am so happy that they ventured off the beaten path
and found me. It made my day.

Comments:
I love reading your blog it is always insightful.I have never seen the movie Spainglish but I will check it out per your recomendation. I am also a native Californian and I know how you feel. Most cities are starting to embrace there neighborhoods. The south tends to be a little slower but I am sure it will catch on soon. Until then keep spreading that Caliornia sunshine at your great neighborhood bakery that is a bit of Socal in Savannah.Keep up the great work.Best of luck.

From a fellow "phony", I completely understand. Just yesterday I was thinking about schemes to get back to the west coast. How did you end up in Savannah?

My issue with LA is that you can't easily walk off all of the cake I like to eat :) Getting in your car is just too easy (and necessary) in LA.

I've been to Savannah back in 2000 and it has to be one of the most beautiful places in the States! We stayed at a cozy bed and breakfast place and made trips to the beach, I simply loved it!

"Spanglish" is a little gem, my favorite character was Flor's daughter ;)
